Attribution Tracks - Standing on the Shoulders of Gadgets

March 20, 2011

One of the things we like most about open hardware (OSHW) is how anyone can build off of someone else's design and create something completely new. It's the ability of makers to learn from and modify other people's products that drives innovation, and is one of the things that gives open hardware an edge on the proprietary world. At inMojo our goal is to do everything we can to make that process easier, so we are very happy to announce a new feature for the site: Attribution Tracks

Starting today makers will have the ability to explicitly link to any items that inspired, are used in, or were the starting point of one of their products. As products evolve, this will allow anyone to track the relationships between products over time.

All attributed or referenced items will now show up in the main area of the item detail page.

Attributed or Referenced Items Example

To see what items a product has inspired, see the 'Referring Items' box in the right column.

As makers enter more attribution tracks, we will be rolling additional views and filters, but already we are enjoying jumping from item to item using these connections.

And as always, let us know what you think by sending us an email or posting feedback below and keep on the lookout for more features coming down the line.
