This breakout board gives you simple, direct access to the UART pins of Bluegiga's versatile WT12 Class 2 Bluetooth module, two of the GPIO pins, and the RESET pin. Notable features include:

Latest iWRAP5 firmware released from Bluegiga

Standard 0.1" pin spacing

Power filtering components (C1 - 100 nF, and L1 - 10 nH)

Module reset pin pad

Flow control RTS/CTS solder jumper (like the BlueSMiRF)

Pin spacing to fit UART + GPIO pins on opposite sides of a standard split breadboard

The newest version of this board provides access to two GPIO pins (6 and 7). This is an excellent addition for microcontroller projects, since you can use very fast and clean I/O control to switch from DATA mode to COMMAND mode in the iWRAP firmware (avoiding the use of resource-intensive MUX mode), and you can detect active Bluetooth links without switching to COMMAND mode and directly querying the status.

NOTE: This board doesn't have a voltage regulator on it. Make SURE you are powering it with +3.3V only. Also, you can run this board with absolutely no external components. I have done so reliably. While the documentation recommends L1 and C1, you can just connect the L1 SMT pads to get the board working without those parts. I wouldn't do that for anything but quick prototyping though.

ANOTHER NOTE: Building this by hand is not an easy task. If you are not very comfortable with SMT modules and hot-air rework, I strongly recommend buying the assembled module instead of the board itself. All components on this version of the board are surface-mount parts.

The UART header is pin-compatible with SparkFun's BlueSMiRF modules. The WT12's default port settings are 115200, 8/N/1, hardware flow control enabled but optional. Note that if you are not using flow control, you should connect CTS to GND for reliable operation.

If you are using the Arduino Serial Monitor tool, remember that each command sent must end in a CR+LF. Make sure your terminal settings are correct in this regard.

The WT12, which uses the iWRAP firmware, can do almost everything you could want to do with a Bluetooth module except for analog A2DP (you'd need the WT32 for that). It even has support for the HID profile built in, which makes it the only easily accessible DIY-friendly BT device with this capability. Almost everything else you can get from electronics retail places only has SPP. Details on the module are available here.

It is specifically designed for the Arduino platform, but it could easily be ported to other devices since the vast majority of the code is pure C++ with very little Arduino-specific stuff.
